HOLY WEEK AND EASTER.

Each evening in Holy Week, i.e., from Monday,

April 3rd. to Friday, April 7th, there will be a Service

in the Parish Church at 8 p.m.

At these Services special addresses will be given

dealing with the Cross and Passion of our Lord. It

is hoped that our parishioners will make an effort

to attend these Services.

On Good Friday there will be Morning Prayer, with

an address in the Parish Church at 11.30 a.m. There

will be no collection at the Holy Week Services,

except On Good Friday, when the collections will be,

as is our custom, in aid of the Church of Ireland Jews'

Society.

EASTER DAY.

There will be Holy Communion at 8 a.m. and after

Morning Prayer at 11.30 a.m. Every Communicant

member of the Parish should try to be present at one

of the Communion Services on Easter Day, for on this

day we remember especially our Saviour's victory over

death and over sin. He invites us to His holy feast

that He may share with us His joy and power. How

can any professing Christian at Easter time turn a

deaf ear to His command, "This do in remembrance

of Me"? On Good Friday we see God's love in action,

God in Christ stooping to the lowest. The Jews

thought that they had defeated Christ and silenced

Him by the Cross, but on Easter Day the blackness of

the Cross was diffused by the bright dawn of Easter.

The empty tomb in Joseph's garden changed the

Crucifixion from defeat to victory, it declared Christ

to be "the Son of God with power"; by rising again

Christ conquered the worst that evil could do. The

message of Easter speaks to us of the Victory of the

Son of God, but it speaks to each individual soul of

victory too, "Because I live ye shall live also. "Because

of the resurrection we know we love and serve a

living present Lord, not the memory of a dead hero;

we know that the grave is not the end, that righteousness

and goodness can never be defeated, that the love of

God is stronger than the power of sin. Without the

gospel of Easter human life indeed would not be worth

living, death would be a terrible and unspeakable

calamity, but with St. Paul we can truly say "Thanks

be to God who giveth us the victory through our Lord

Jesus Christ. "Victory in life, victory in and through

death. Let us thank God for these mercies and show

our thankfulness by worshipping Him on Easter Day.

EASTER DECORATIONS.

The Church will be decorated on Saturday, April

8th, at 2 p.m. Gifts of flowers, etc., will be gratefully

received.

VISIT OF S.A.M.S. MISSIONARY.

On Sunday evening, April 2nd, at the Evening

Prayer, the preacher will be the Rev. J. W. Warner,

a missionary of the South American Missionary

Society, who has been working in Paraguayan Chaco.

This present year marks the Jubilee of Barbrooke

Grubb's wonderful pioneer work in the Chaco, and no

doubt Mr. Warner will have interesting information

for us about recent developments of the work in that

area.

MOTHERS' UNION.

The monthly meeting of the above took place in

Seagoe School on Tuesday, March 14th, at 7.30 p.m.

when a most helpful talk on "Health" was given by

Dr. Winifred Hadden. The Rector presided, and thanked

Dr. Hadden for her kindness in coming to address the

members.

The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, April

18th, at 7.30, when it is hoped that Miss Wightman

will give an address.

At the Tuesday evening Service in Holy Week there

will be an enrolment service in the Parish Church

tor new members.

THE ANNUAL GENERAL EASTER VESTRY.

This important meeting of registered vestrymen and

vestrywomen will take place in Seagoe School on

Thursday, April 13th, at 8 p.m.

All members entitled to attend will receive a printed

notification later.

The main function of this General Easter Vestry is

to elect the Select Vestry to carry on the business

side of the Church's life in this parish for the ensuing

year. and as well, this year the triennial election will

take place also, i.e., the appointment of three parochial

nominators, whose duty it is, in conjunction with the

Diocesan authorities, to elect an incumbent when a

vacancy occurs; the election of four Synodsmen to

represent this parish at the annual Diocesan Synod.

C.L.B. ANNUAL CONCERT.

The above took place on Friday evening, March

3rd, at 8 p.m., in the Parochial Hall, Edenderry. The

entire programme was given by the Officers and

members of the C.L.B., except one item, a sketch by

the First Presbyterian Boy Scouts. A large audience

enjoyed the excellent programme, which was as follows:

—Items by the C.L.B. Mouth Organ Band; songs by

Training Corps Choir; songs by C.S.M. Foster Shanks;

song and recitation by Lance-Cpl. Clifford Mitchell;

Training Corps Minstrel Troupe; Lieut. J. Hynes,

songs; mouth organ solos, Private Brian M'Court;

vocal items, Senior C.L.B. Choir; recitations, Sergt.

W. Donaldson; a musical play and a camp scene,

script by Capt. Mitchell, which gave a vivid picture

of the life and fun at a C.L.B. Camp. During the

intervals there was community singing.

At the conclusion the Rector, who presided,

congratulated the officers and members of the C.L.B.

on the very excellent programme. He also thanked the

audience for their support and presence, Mrs. Lutton,

who made the costumes for the Minstrel Troupe, Mr.

T. W. Jackson for loan of carpet, the 1st Portadown

Rover Scouts for contributing a sketch to the programme,

the advertisers on the programme, and Miss T. Wilson,

accompanist.

EDENDERRY SHAMROCK TEA.

The above was held in the Parochial Hall, Edenderry,

on Thursday, 16th March, at 7.45 p.m. The Superintendents

and Teachers of the Edenderry Morning and Afternoon

Sunday Schools and their friends provided a sumptuous

tea, after which a varied and most interesting programme

followed. The programme included accordion selections

by Mr. A. Martin, Banbridge; baritone solos by Mr. D

Morrow; step-dancing by Miss Betty Duncan, Armagh;

recitations by Miss E. Burke; soprano solos by Miss P.

M’Cormack, Armagh; nursery rhymes and a realistic

rendering of "The Chestnut Tree" by some of the Sunday

School children; dialogues by the Misses S. Maginnis

and I. Walker. All present were loud in their praises of

the programme, each item was the best of its kind.

The organisers are to be congratulated on the success

of the entertainment. The proceeds, amounting

to over £18, are to be devoted to Sunday School Prize

Fund. Miss A. M'Dougall trained the children, and

their contributions added greatly to the enjoyment of

the evening.

CARNE SUNDAY SCHOOL.

The annual prize-giving social took place in Carne

Sunday School on Friday, March 17th, at 7.30 p.m.

The Rector congratulated the Superintendent

and Teachers on the healthy condition of the Sunday

School, and thanked them for their invaluable help.

Mrs. Appelbe distributed the prizes. The Rev. W. F.

Hayes helped with the games, which were played with

great zest until it was time to go home. The teachers

as usual provided an excellent tea.

THE ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT.

We hope that the printed Statement of Accounts

for the year ending December 31st, 1938, will be in the

hands of the W.F.O. and annual subscribers to the

Sustentation Fund before Easter. It is gratifying to

note that this year was commenced with our accounts

showing a small balance on the right side. This is

as it should be, but this sound financial state can only

be kept up by each individual taking his responsibility

in the matter seriously. There are wage-earners' names

missing from the report, who should be regular weekly

contributors. To those who contribute regularly and to

those who have increased their contributions we are

deeply grateful. Sets of envelopes can be had by applying

to Mr. J. H. Twinem, the Hon. W.F.O. Secretary.

OBITUARY.

This month we regret to chronicle the passing from

our midst of two old parishioners. Jane Collins belonged

to an old and respected Seagoe family. She was of a

retiring disposition and owing to increasing years she

did not go out much; at the last she sank rather quickly.

Andrew Costelloe was indeed a remarkable man. He was

in his ninety-first year and retained his mental faculties to

the end, which came very peacefully—a happy conclusion

to a long and useful life. He was a regular communicant

and rarely missed a Morning Service in the Parish

Church. He was in Church after Christmas, a record

surely for one who had passed his ninetieth mile-stone.

At one time he was a valued member of the Select Vestry,

his gentle manner and cheerful outlook endeared him to

all who knew him. He will be greatly missed in the parish.

To the bereaved we tender our deep sympathy. May the

Victory and Peace of Easter be theirs.
